Conversations with the Disabled Guy

Many years ago- and I was reminding DG of this today after he declared the Selective Service is "how they find you"- he got a jury summons in the mail. I called the special phone number that's on the summons to explain why he can't serve on a jury. It went something like this:

Me: "My husband is disabled from a stroke. He can't retain new information and suffers from aphasia and apraxia [then I explained what those are]."Woman: "So he's disabled?" Next...

Stroke survivors support each other

A dozen stroke survivors and their caregivers sit around the television at Hyland Crest's fireside lounge watching a video on the emotional impact one blood clot can have on the lives of victims and their families.

One man bursts into tears watching other survivors talk about their changed lives.

"I tell ya, some of that stuff hits home," another man said after finishing the video. "It's hard to look at. Hard to listen to, too."

Once a month, this group comes together in Minden to battle through the lingering effects strokes have had on their bodies, minds, emotions and their caregivers. The group addresses both sides of the equation – those recovering from stroke and those aiding loved ones through that recovery. Next...

Health Care Gives Way

WASHINGTON — President Obama drew sustained laughter from Congress, especially Democrats, on Wednesday when he declared in his State of the Union speech that “by now it should be fairly obvious that I didn’t take on health care because it was good politics.”But after spending 2009 emphasizing that a health care overhaul was his top domestic priority, Mr. Obama gave it much less prominence in his address. He did not mention it until more than half an hour in — a sign of how imperiled the bill has become.
In the last week, Democrats have vigorously debated among themselves how to salvage the legislation. Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested Wednesday that the Senate would have to take the next step and make substantial changes in its bill before the House would act again.Next...
